    I'd personally go with the FDIC, which has largely ended the phenomenon of bank runs.

    Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have been important in promoting home ownership (sometimes too zealously, of course).

    The Tennessee Valley Authority, Amtrak, and the Export-Import Bank are also very important.
