David's attitude was right. Scripture says he was a man after God's own heart. God calls His people sheep, and Jesus is known as the Good Shepherd. A shepherd leads the flock and protects it from harm.

Your question reminded me of this one article I read about Caesarea Philippi (the place where Jesus made St Peter the head of the church so to speak.)

As it turns out, this place was a town that grew up around the veneration of the god Pan, who was also the god of shepherds...and Jesus was telling Peter to be a shepherd to His flock.

There are so many sheep-herding analogies in the bible, I really think God was trying to tell us something....maybe something about tending sheep (which can be boring), yet one is out in all kinds of weather for them, and (there were no fences back then) you had to be good with a slingshot.

And what is a King anyway? Just a leader of some sort that governs and guides the people to a better spot of land

Look at the civilization at the time of the story.

You have a lesser kingdom in the middle of several bigger powers.

You cannot have the Terminator as king who grabs a 50mm and mows down

    the Philistines.

But, if a shepherd, the symbol of the working man at that time, could bring down a giant.

Well, there is your proof that the God of Abraham is on your side.

Irony is a recurring theme in Scripture. In most cases, it allows God to demonstrate his glory by raising the most insignificant individuals (Israel, David, the Nazarene Messiah, etc) to do his deeds. In other words, it is so that it may be evident that it is the power of God at work in them, not something from in themselves.

Additionally, the imagery of a shepherd protecting his sheep and a king protecting his people is not to be overlooked. This association of the lowly position of shepherd with the exalted position of king is also to be considered. A lot of implications in these things. Think it through.

God is a sharp dude. He could tell that David was going to be the best for the job. We don't always know why God does things the way He does them, but we have seen over and over that He is very good at this God business.

Because He had the kind of heart God wanted. Your strengths weakness mean nothing to Him. Your strength He makes strongeryour weakness He empowers. Do you have a heart to wasnt to love and follow God. Will you come after Him and love His ppl. Are you humble enuff to have faith in God as the biggest most powerful thing instead of the gaint or the 900 men.

    Gods after your heart

God's techniques are continually this form, the least often is the 1st, the 1st often is the least, the known will inherit the dominion, God resists the proud. His capability can purely be shown on your weak spot. that's the only way that everyone else will see that the attention belongs to God and not guy. God will % the least able, to teach His could. God supplies favors to the known. And God will shame the proud. Shalom,
