"While it would be nice if everything went according to plan, this could be a tumultuous day."

Does it mean if everything had gone according to plan it would have been tumultuous?

It means what it says. If the plan is executed properly, there will be a positive result. If it is not done correctly, the day, even if a victory, will not go silently.

No. It means that it would be nice if everything went according to plan but that it could possibly turn out to be a tumultuous day. In other words your plans could be interrupted by some unexpected event.

It means that it would be nice that everything goes by planned and it would be tumultuous if it were this way, but even if it doesn't it will be okay :)
