What does the saying "we all live downstream" mean?

    Everything we do will always affect another person either negatively or positively. The reverse is also true - they affect us as well. Think the next time you are rude or throw your trash out the window going down the highway. Your upstream from someone.

    In the old days, a farm, a community, or even a city, got its drinking water from a river, and then dumped its sewage back into the same river. Needless to say, no one would want to live downstream of that city.

    So, figuratively, "we all live downstream" means don't harm others, because we all live "downstream" of someone else.

    They mean exactly that. LA as in Los Angeles, if they wanted to be specific then they'd just say Hollywood or Santa Monica..etc. Whenever you say LA a lot of people would automatically assume you mean Los Angeles.

    It means that there is always someone "higher up" the stream -whether it be wealth, looks, smarts, or whatever.
