Employer wants us employees to pay for "damages"?

I work at subway. And somehow the bread boxes for the week was short of 60 bread sticks. Now my boss is like all us employees will have to pay 50$ each for a total of 300$ on our pay checks for the loss bread because it could be "any one of our" mistake.

Can he do that? If not where do I go to report him anonymously ?

Update:

I wish I could do that but I don't want to be fired

Those bread sticks did not walk out the door without human help. Somebody knows what happened and more likely more than one somebody. Your boss is hoping that it is worth the $50 to them to tell who is stealing.

Forget anonymous. Tell your manager that they have no legal right to do so and if they do, you will report them to the state department of labor.

Know your rights and exercise them if you are being taken advantage of.
