    HOW LONG IS A “DAY”?

In the Bible, the word “day” can refer to various periods of time. At Genesis 2:4, for example, the entire creative period of six “days” is spoken of as “the day that Jehovah God made earth and heaven.”

Each day evidently involved a considerable length of time. Interestingly, while the Bible specifically mentions the end of each of the first six “days,” it makes no mention of the end of the seventh day. Why? That day is still in progress. Genesis 2:3; Hebrews 4:4-6, 11.

The word “day” in the Bible is used with several different meanings, even as it has a variety of applications in modern times. As the earth makes one complete rotation on its axis, it measures out one day of 24 hours.

In this sense, a day is made up of daytime and nighttime, a total of 24 hours. However, the daylight period itself, usually averaging 12 hours, is also called day. “And God began calling the light Day, but the darkness he called Night.” (Gen. 1:5) This gives rise to the time term “night,” the period usually averaging 12 hours of darkness.

Another sense is where the word “day's” refers to a period of time contemporaneous with some outstanding person.

For example, Isaiah saw his vision “in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah”, and the days of Noah and of Lot are mentioned as being prophetic.

Another example of the flexible or figurative use of the word “day” is Peter’s saying that “one day is with Jehovah as a thousand years.” (2 Pet. 3:8) In the Genesis account, the creative day is an even longer period of time millenniums.

In both the Hebrew and the Greek Scriptures, the word “day” (Heb., yohm; Gr., he·me′ra) is used in a literal and in a figurative or even symbolic sense.
