    The trick here is to look at the whole of the question first, think, and then ask yourself the following.

    What's 66 & 2/3 %?

    Well it's just two thirds of something i.e. 2 x (100/3)

    So Sam is spends two thirds of his salary and has $300 dollars left, which of course must be the remaining one third, and there you have it.

    $300 = one third, so his salary must be three times this = $900

    Try to keep things simple in maths don't jump in first and get bogged down.

    Sam saves = 100 - 66 2/3 = 33 1/3% = 300 $

    Let,

    salary = s dollars,

    then,

    s - (66 2/3)s/100 = 300,

    s[1 - 2/3] = 300,

    s/3 = 300,

    OR,

    s = 3*300 = 900 dollars >=======================< ANSWER

    Spent = 66 2/3 %

    Saved (not spent) = 100 - 66 2/3 % = 33 1/3 %

    33 1/3% = $300

    1/3 <==(Converted 33 1/3% into a fraction.) = $300

    3/3 <==(Total salary = 300*3 = $900 ANS
