What is the historical significance of Fugitive Slave Act (1850)?

    It forced Northerners to actively assist in the arrest and return of escaped slaves that had reached northern non slave states.

    This made abolitionists very happy,and they redoubled their efforts in their campaign against slavery as a result - which made southerners very unhappy.

    Thus the Fugitive Slave Act og 1850 increased tensions between North and South,and pro and anti slavery factions.
