Gates v. Collier was a landmark case decided in U.S. federal court that brought an end to the Trusty system and the flagrant inmate abuse that accompanied it at Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, Mississippi.

Not sure what decision split you are referring to because in 1972 it was simply federal judge William C. Keady who found in favor of the inmates, writing that Parchman Farm violated modern standards of decency. He ordered an immediate end to all unconstitutional conditions and practices. This decision was upheld by unanimous vote in the Fifth Circuit Courts of Appeal.
