dictatorship had a different meaning back then, a dictatorship happened when the consul (president and general in one basically) needed to extend his term (normally 2 years) when Rome faced danger. this happened several times, the last when Julius Caesar became a dictator and never relinquished his power.
it would be hard to find out how long exactly without doing extensive research of Roman history.
