    The breakup of the vehicle began at T+73.162 seconds and at an altitude of 48,000 feet (15 km).

    Note that the crew cabin survived intact. It tumbled slowly in a ballistic arc and eventually struck the ocean.

    It is thought that at least some of the crew survived the initial breakup. The captain being one. Any of the crew that survived the breakup certainly would have died on impact with the ocean.
