the profile pic album doesnt have that option - you have to go thru each picture to make it private

With the profile pics album, you have to set each photo to private individually by going to each picture and clicking whatever the symbol is (an earth, if it's public, or two people if it's friends only, etc) and changing the selection.
The problem is, you can't make your default profile picture private. That is the image you have selected to show to the world, so you can't hide it. You can make it semi-private so that people can't click to see it full-size, but that little thumbnail will always show up for everyone.

click on profile pic and you have an option of customize then you can set peoples by your own choice who can see the pic.
