Well adoption is selfish and inconsiderate. I wasn't too surprised by the comment :) my son has been told the same things by his adopters.
A redundant theme persists here and that's what makes your findings valuable. The common theme where mother and child are separated due to poverty and age (not for whoring and drugs). Vultures go in for the kill, pay the big bucks, taking advantage of those who are helpless.
It's what happens ... yet everyone knows that the real mother just needed resources and social support to raise her own child. Years go by and everyone is moved/shocked that he wants to find his mother?? Are you kidding me?
Sounds SO MUCH LIKE Canada's Residential School System, erasing identity/culture of aboriginal children, it's every bit colonial ... master/slave ... etc etc etc.
@Jennifer: Easy for you to say, "Just roll your eyes and move on to what is more important." Ummm, I'd like to see you tell that to an aboriginal person who takes offence to a comment that trivializes them or their ancestral experience. Pardon me, but I have to ask, what is it that YOU suggest Pip (or women like Pip) to do/feel and/or be in the world now that she has had her only child taken from her - while YOU in the meantime are tucking someone else's kids in bed every night? Sounds like another be-grateful speech from a vulture.
@Jennifer: Ummm, because you can't provide an actual quote on my position about abusive ADOPTIVE parents and their adoptees ... the abuse statics in adoptive families reveal that adopted children ARE beaten and abused both sexually and physically. Some have been burned, starved, and KILLED by their adopters. A rather large proportion of Russian adoptees have been murdered by their adoptive parents. There are numerous reports on children that have been placed in the homes of paedophiles. Moreover, because adoptions are closed and wrapped in secrecy, the transparent aspect and real data collected on abused children in adoptive homes is likely more than what we typically see. There are a disproportionate number of children in rehabilitation institutions who have been thrown away by their adopters. Failure to meet the expectations of adopters, combined with lack of counselling to prepare adopters of what to expect. Furthermore, because adoptees suffer from identity confusion and feelings of abandonment that stem from trying to understand why they were let go and adopted in the first place, my opinion is that adoption causes many problems and being separated from ones family should always be a last resort after all efforts to keep a family together.
