Positive ions are always smaller than the atom they come from (removing valence electron(s) increases the attraction of the nucleus for the remaining electrons and pulls them closer)

Negative ions are always larger then the atom they come from (adding electron(s) increases the repulsions between the valence electrons and they move farther apart)
