Why did the Edict of Nantes (1598) succeed where so many earlier peace initiatives had failed?
Any interesting opinions?

It succeeded (until 1685) because it was a.... 'compromise' where.... both sides got something.
The Catholics got...that theirs was the official religion of France and no Protestants within 20 miles of Paris. The Protestants got... that if they were nobles or of the middle class they could practice religion freely and have totally equal rights with the majority Catholics.
