He didn't become the lawful owner of the area around the mill that he wasn't able to keep the waves of miners off of it, so his discovery of gold was his ruin.

Discovering gold ruined him because he was unable to keep the large number of miners off his land, and did not become its legal owner.

He couldn't keep everyone off the the land near the mill, after all he was not the legal owner, and his luck in finding gold was unlucky in the end.
