A terror attack occurred on 9/11/12. Ambassador Stevens, US Ambassador to Libya, along with three other Americans, were tortured and murdered in the attack. Ambassador Stevens' body was dragged through the streets.

Here's the drama: The day after the attack, Obama, and administration officials came out and publicly blamed an offensive video that appeared on YouTube. The video made fun of the Prophet Muhammed. The administration said the violence came about because Libyans and Egyptians were protesting the video, and the attack that resulted in the death of the Ambassador was a spontaneous event that happened during the spontaneous protest.

In the days following, information came to light that there was no protest. As it turns out, there had been 16 different terrorist attacks in Libya, including two bombs set at our Consulate in Benghazi, one of which blew a 40-foot hole in the Consulate wall. There had been two separate attempts on the British Ambassador's life. Great Britain closed its Embassy and left. Ambo Stevens had also been requesting extra security for himself and his staff for months, since April, and each request was denied. Ambo Stevens had written in his personal diary that he was afraid for his life, and that multiple threats had been made against him on the Embassy website.

Another issue is that the Consulate building in Benghazi was woefully inadequate. Consulate walls are supposed to be ten feet high, three feet thick. There is supposed to be blast proof glass on the windows and bomb blast curtains as well. None of these things were at the Consulate building. In order to not follow these rules, a waiver had to be signed to waive those requirements.

In August, while Ambo is requesting more security, the administration pulled two full security teams out of Libya. On 9/11/12, terrorists stormed the Consulate with rocket-propelled grenades and other heavy weapons, took, tortured and killed our Ambassador. He was missing for five hours. There is video of the entire attack. The State Dept was watching it in real time, as it happened, on a video uplink. Charlene Lamb, the woman who withdrew the security teams in August, admitted that she was on the phone listening to the whole thing as it happened.

It also came out that Ambo was complaining that the British security team that had been subcontracted to protect him (why British and not American security?) were not up to par and were woefully undertrained.

Further drama is that the Obama administration floated the story of the video for 14 days, asked YouTube to take the video down -- YouTube said no. The man who created the video was arrested (free speech, anyone?) for a probation violation. The Administration spent $70,000 in taxpayer money airing commercials in Libya apologizing for the video, and Obama apologized for the video six times during his appearance at the UN. He went to Las Vegas the day after the attack for a fundraiser. He went on The View and Univision (?) explaining that he wasn't sure what happened, but he'd tell us all when he knew. He said this at a time when hearings were going on on The Hill, and all the facts listed above had already come out. Some tried to blame Republican budget cuts, but Charlene Lamb admitted that had nothing to do with why the security teams were pulled out, nor why no extra security was given.

It came out last night that Hillary Clinton had sent memos to the administration requesting more security for Libya, but those requests were apparently ignored. It came out today that the two security teams were pulled out, and other security denied, to emit an air of normalization in the region.

This is it in a nutshell.

Edit: Note to SupaStar -- Neither Congress, nor the House, has the power to provide, or not provide security to any of our Embassies around the world. Their vote to cut budget has nothing to do with money that's already in the budget, set more than a year in advance. This very question of budget cuts was posed to Charlene Lamb, who testified before the House that budget cuts did NOT play a part in any decision to give or not give security to the Embassies. She testified, under oath, that she was ordered to withdraw the two security teams to establish an air of "normalization."

Source(s): I've been following this story since it broke, on 9/11/12, and I have also worked in two separate Embassies overseas.

I agree with @Karen when she writes:

"A foreign consolate is "AMERICAN" ground in any foreign country. We should have had protection for our American's there."

Unfortunately, the GOP in congress cut funding for embassy and consulate protection by a half billion dollars in the last 2 years.

    =======================

    "No Shame"

"The ugly truth is that the same people who are accusing the administration of not providing sufficient security for the American consulate in Benghazi have voted to cut the State Department budget, which includes financing for diplomatic security.

The most self-righteous critics don’t seem to get the hypocrisy, or maybe they do and figure that if they hurl enough doubts and complaints at the administration, they will deflect attention from their own poor judgments on the State Department’s needs."

    I hope you understand now.

I have little hope for @Karen.

A foreign consolate is "AMERICAN" ground in any foreign country. We should have had protection for our American's there. The Ambassador sent several messages to the White House requesting protection and they were ignored. As a result of the lack of protection, he was sodomized, killed and his body drug through the streets. It took hours for us to even find the body to return home. The Republicans (and several Democrats) want to know WHY we did not get him OUT of there if we could not protect him. The British Embassy was abandoned and even the Red Cross got out, but the White House left our guys there with no protection. OBama is NOT giving real answers, instead he LIED about some on line video (which was now found to be untrue) instead of owning up to his actions. We remain waiting for his EXPLANATION which when given will ultimately lead to showing everyone his negligence and inability to handle foreign affairs. In truth, he doesn't want to admit there is still trouble in the Middle East.... that's why he keeps saying he killed Bin Laden. (Like he has ended the problems over there....) I hope you understand now.

The President, his administration and the State Department all claimed for weeks that the murder of our Ambassador was because of a demonstration that got violent in reaction to a youtube video. They knew it was a lie and they touted it as the truth because it benefits the President's re-election campaign.
