Plessy v. Ferguson was the Supreme Court ruling establishing that states could mandate that whites and blacks be given separate facilities by "Jim Crow" laws. This guaranteed that black people would be given inferior facilities. Quite apart from the equally inevitable fueling of hostility on both sides, it also did incalculable damage to the education of black children.

The laws that allowed segregation were generally refered to as Jim Crow laws. Plessy v. Fergusen was a famous supreme court case which resulted in the decision to keep the Jim Crow laws in place. These two issues caused the unrest which fuelled the civil rights movement.
