What's so special about Ohio that Presidential candidates need it to win?

Ohio is not an overly partisan state. There are as many voters willing to vote Republican as Democrat. And it is a large state with 18 electoral votes. Many other states are predetermined to swing one way or the other. There were only nine states that flipped from Republican in 2004 to Democrat in 2008 (Ohio was one of them).
But consider this, if Romney carries five of these nine: Ohio, Florida, Indiana, North Carolina and Virginia, he will still lose the election. Ohio would not have made the difference. He would need at least one of the remaining four: Colorado, Iowa, Nevada or New Mexico.
Side note: it is not true that every president carried Ohio. Kennedy won without it in 1960, as did Roosevelt in 1944.

Subjective and objective answers.
Subjective - OH has voted for the winner for many, many years.
Objective - right now Romney is ahead in VA,FL and NC with momentum in each . These are MUST win states for Romney. OH is the key. If he gets all FOUR, most likely Romney will win the presidency! This is assuming that all the rest of the states go as predicted! Another Ohioan for Romney/Ryan "12"Source(s): Reality - Awareness of!
