George V by a long chalk, his reign saw the years of WW1 , and he brought great credit to the Royal Family largely because the king displayed good sense in acting as a national figurehead while leaving the politicians to manage the war . Another difficult development in a period of rapid change was the break up of the British Empire , George oversaw the `The Statute of Westminster ` in 1931 and saw the creation of the Commonwealth . The king also saw the formation of the first Labour government in 1924 and the General Strike of 1926 also the economic crisis of 1930 - 1 . Throughout all these difficult times George was a force for common sense and decency , he urged moderation and national unity .

He was first and foremost a family man and he took seriously the responsibility of training his children to take up royal duties .

When he and queen Mary celebrated the Silver Jubilee of his reign in 1935 , crowds cheered him for his decency and sung `For he`s a Jolly Good Fellow `

George V. Although he was quite a dull person (stamp collecting, measuring the temperature etc..) his 'reinvention' of the British Royal Family during WWI probably saved them. He made them seem less German by changing their House name to Windsor, chose not to allow the Russian Imperial Family (who all got subsequently murdered) to stay in Britain, made the Royal Family more public than ever by visiting all classes of people and founding the Order of the British Empire.

Edward VIII was a very poor king who abdicated in under a year. George VI was very shy and didn't want the role of King but his father's influences and dedication were carried out by him.

Well, as Edward VIII abdicated after less than 6 months, in order to marry a tramp, he removed himself from any such discussions.
