As Malcolm has said, Danny Elfman is not a classical composer (the presence of an orchestra does not define 'classical' music), he is a composer of film/soundtrack music. Some names of REAL modern classical composers (* indicates still alive):

    Elliott Carter *

    John Corigliano *

    Edison Denisov

    Henri Dutilleux *

    Haward Hanson

    Vagn Holmboe

    Arvo Pärt *

    Walter Piston

    Sergei Prokofiev

    Einojuhani Rautavaara *

    Wolfgang Rihm *

    Poul Ruders *

    William Schuman

    Valentin Silvestrov *

    Robert Simpson

    Dmitri Shostakovich

    John Tavener *

... just to name a very few.

I appreciate cinematic composers such as Elmer Bernstein, Hans Zimmer, Justin Durban, John Williams, Chris Haigh and others.

I'm also a fan of Eric Whitacre's choral works.

Tan Dun is a fairly popular classical composer, but his opera "The First Emperor left me kind of cold.

I don't know if you're asking about music in general.

I know Yiruma, a piano composer. I love his music. :]
