How was richard wright encouraged for independence?

I recently finished the novel Black Boy, by Richard Wright, and I would like some example in how Richard was encouraged for independence? Thanks a lot!

    Some muggers attacked Wright when he went to buy groceries. Instead of protecting or comforting him, his mother gave him a stick with which to defend himself. Then she locked the door and refused to let him back in until he had the groceries. This incident forced him to learn how to take care of himself.
