He had reached the age where you start to suffer from Ill Health , have to watch what you eat , cant drink booze like you want to , have to stop smoking , and cant get about as you used to .
He had been badly hurt as a young man in WW1 as an ambulance crewman in north Italy , which possibly affected his ability to have sex -- certainly that problem features in the heroes of several of his books -- and on approaching 60 would be likely to be losing the ability to have sex anyway .
On his trip to go on safari in Africa he was hurt in a plane crash , and then the second plane which was to fly him to hospital also crashed on take-off later that same day , injuring him quite severely , including skull and probably brain damage .
By his death that brain problem had flared up again and he had been quite ill in several extended periods .
I think he just looked forward at what probably lay in store for him and said " Balls to this ! " and put the shotgun in his mouth ( MESSY ! ! ! but then he was rather a selfish sort of guy ) .
There is an excellent article about him on Wikipedia , with links to the Hemingway society , who will tell you all about him .
Very fine Author , got a lot of his stuff here at home on the shelves .

Hemingway and Gary Cooper were very close friends and when Cooper died from cancer Hemingway was so devastated it tripped something to his very core. Hemingway had lived with death surrounding him in his travels and his literary works and his life. His writing skills had abandoned him and he feared his health was deteriorating to a point where real lancing-like pain was going to be his constant companion. He simply did not want to face a lingering weaknesses of mind and body - so he ended it.

There have been lots of theories but many conclude that he was depressed and also battling a disease called hemochromatosis which causes physical deterioration. That along with his heavy drinking contibuted to him commiting suicide
