Why are there ads everywhere in the form of orange links?

I've noticed an increasing amount of random words in my web browser being colored orange with two lines beneath them. Hovering my mouse over them leads to a little box popping up with an ad related to he words. For example, "spring water" was highlighted in the description for a book and lead to a little box about bottled water.

And now, new tabs keep popping open in my browser with adds based on something I clicked. It's annoying. I use Firefox, so I don't know if this problem is just for me, for everyone, or for Firefox users.

Check your extensions and add-ons and remove anything advertising related. Get rid of any and all toolbars, those are the worst.

Check Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features and uninstall programs you don't use or need. Especially toolbars.

Run an antimalware program like Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and your antivirus scanner. Delete everything they find.
