My wireless is being strange, sinking mbps rate upon connection?

I just got an Asus PCE-N53 Wireless N 300mbps dual band adapter, and for some reason when I connect to it it shows like 140mbps at first, then it goes down and down until it is at 2 mbps, why is this happening?

Update:

Also, I used to use an adapter before this that showed 216mbps (though the adapter could only go up to speeds of 100mbps, that's why I upgraded). My router is 450mbps.

Interference. Your adapter is trying to establish the faster, most stable connection that it can. It appears that your most stable connection only runs at 2 Mbps though.
