As I understand it, representational art is an umbrella term that encompasses naturalism. Art is representational when it depicts identifiable objects or people (as opposed to abstraction). Naturalism is a type of representational art that depicts its subjects in a natural state, free from idealism and ornamentation. Gustave Courbet is considered to be one of the great naturalistic painters.Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courbet
