adulterate in a sentence?

Can you tell me if this sentence is correct? It seems awkward to say but matches the definition.

He adulterated the sanitizer in the bucket by pouring Coke into it.

I agree that it is awkward. If you want to stress what happened to the sanitizer, try the passive voice. The sanitizer was adulterated when he poured Coke into the bucket.

Your original, however, is good if you want to stress that he was the guilty party.
