Are public schools supposed to provide education for children or employment for teachers?

Which is a means and which is the end?

Quality teachers provide the means. Good education for students is the desired result.

I have a lot of respect for GOOD teachers. They are few and far between however. The problem stems from the overly powerful teachers unions that allow a bad teacher to remain simply because he or she has tenure. Just think of all the kids that are run through that classroom over a career of thirty years or so.

Employing teachers is not a goal. It is simply the means to the end result. With today's technology, a good teacher can now reach thousands of students at the same time via the net....so why do we tolerate having bad teachers anywhere?

For the benefit of our children's education and for working middle class families, the Chicago teachers will lead the way back to the glory of the American labor movement, which we haven't seen since the turn of the 20th century. Rahm Emanuel messing with the public school system in Chicago was the straw that broke the camel's back. It's the turning point.
