Listen to gabby. DO NOT GET YOUR EAR PIERCED WITH A GUN, they are not sterile and can shatter your cartilage as the jewellery is blunt and just gets forced into your ear, don't risk it getting infected or getting a disease, go to a professional and get it done with a needle I have not had any expierience with a piercing gun as I find them disgusting and find it hard to understand how they are still legal but anyway if you cleverly decide to go to a professional you will be sat down, asked to show where to get your piercing, the piercer will mark it with a purple pen marker thing :P, then he/she may ask you to take a few deep breaths then on the third one he/she will quickly push the needle through and put the jewellery in. Thats how it's happened with my piercings anyway and this is how I doo my piercings but it will basically be the same. From what ive read it is a lot less painfull getting it done with a needle rather than a gun. With my helix it only burned a little bit straight after the piercing was done and stings a tiny bit for around 2 hours and it literally feels like sunburn. It isn't hard at all to go through cartilage either. As I don't have my navel (belly button :P) pierced I can't say but I have a few piercings and big stretched earlobes as I can honestly say that my helix was my least painful. So please be smart and don't get it done with a gun, go to a professional, if you have to pay more seriously pay for it or wait until you have the money. it is much better to pay for a professional piercing done correctly rather than risking it getting infected, diseased or worse. Peace.
Myself: trainee piercer. I read a lot of body modification things and know a great deal about piercings and have personal expieriences with them. I have 1 helix, an industrial (double helix straight across with a bigger bar), septum (middle of nose), Anti-eyebrow (bar through my cheek), snakebites (2 lip piercings) and my ear lobes are currently stretched to 20mm and I am still going :)
