I disagree that there's no question she died.

Her death is certainly implied, but they also left enough wiggle room that they could bring her back in another movie.

yeah, she did. beyond a doubt gone, never seeing her again in sherlock holmes 3.

they pretty much made her death final. the whole sherlock throwing the handkerchief away

is symbolic for us the audience to know she's finished. its also very good emotional motivation for sherlock to hunt down and deal with moriarty. she was the only side character close enough to

sherlock for the writers to kill without ruining any future stories. they can't kill watson, not even lestrade.
