The long-grain white rice we eat in the US is different than the short-grain "sticky" rice commonly eaten in the orient. One cup of sticky rice (200 grams) contains 3.5 grams of protein. It's also an excellent source of selenium. Hardly empty. Long-grain white rice has little to it besides carbohydrates. That's the definition of "empty calories". We don't eat regular long-grain white rice in our household. We pick up the basmati rice in the burlap sacks at Costco. Basmati rice is a good source of: Iron (1.9mg), Selenium (11.8mcg), Thiamine (0.26mg), and Niacin (2.3mg), and has 4.2 grams of protein per cup (205 grams). And it's much more tasty than the regular stuff. (Basmati rice was first discovered in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. It is produced in India, Pakistan, and in south western United states. The most aromatic are from India and Pakistan. In Hindu, 'basmati' means fragrant and refers to the nutty taste and smell of the grain. Basmati rice, which is a variety of long grained rice, has been cultivated for thousands of years in Pakistan and India.)

It supplies a source of carbs but doesn't have a sufficient amount of vitamins or fiber. Brown rice only has a bit of fiber so they are about the same nutrition wise.
