What difference do the number of pickups on an electric guitar make?

What about the type (single coil, humbacker etc)?

Different types of pickups will give you a different type of sound. Also the number of pickups isn't really as important as the possession of the pickup. The only close up to the bridge will give you a more treble sound while the closer you get to the neck will give a more bass sound. Most guitars also let you use multiple pickups at once as well. When using distortion for rock/metal/etc, guitarists almost always use the bridge pickup. For other styles it can very much more.

    hope that helps!

If you have 3 stripes, that means you're a Sargent.
