One main aspect of the American Dream is the idea that all Americans should have equal opportunities despite what social class they belong to, right? So consider this and then consider the characters and their actions and personalities.
Gatsby: Gained his fortune through corrupt methods, e.g. the illegal selling of alcohol (this was the time of prohibition.) He didn't become rich through honest hard work like the original Dream was supposed to be about, spirituality and honest work. Also despite becoming wealthy, he will never be accepted into the 'social elite' for example Tom Buchanan and his social circle, because they are old money and Gatsby made his money from scratch, he did not have a wealthy family background. Gatsby is known as 'new money.'
Tom: He is racist and sexist. Represents corruption of the idea of equality for all. Also looks down on Gatsby for not having a wealthy family background and being of a lower social class. (See above.)
Myrtle: Her husband works hard and honestly yet she still has an affair with Tom and disrespects her husband. She wants to lead a wealthy lifestyle and believes Tom can help her to achieve this, but she is purely materialistic and lacking the spiritual aspect of the Dream.
I could go on and on but seriously man, read the novel! It's really good.
