Hedgehog breeders with at least three breeding females need to be licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture and undergo regular inspections. Smaller breeders do not need this federal license, however, and there are a wealth of people out there who know nothing of animal husbandry breeding animals for pets to make money, including hedgehogs. These animals are often taken away from their mother too soon, sickly, have a nasty genetic disease that shows up a year later, are unsocialized and mean, etc.
It's best to get a hedgehog from a reputable breeder that has agreed to abide by a code of ethics, even if it costs a little more or requires a drive, to ensure your hedgehog is healthy, happy, and free from genetic diseases and problems. Here are two places to look:
You can also ask for recommendations on the forums listed in my sources.Source(s): 15 years and over a dozen hedgehogs of experience, including rescue. For the best hedgehog care information, please visit the International Hedgehog Association (http://www.hedgehogclub.com) and the Michigan Hedgehog Owners Group (http://www.mihog.org), and consider joining the forums at Hedgehog Central (http://www.hedgehogcentral.com/forums) and/or Chins-n-Hedgies (http://chins-n-hedgies.com/forums).

Look for private breeders, although you could check the local pet shops. Not like Petco. The little ones. But for a animal so uncommon, you very well might have to go to a breeder. You might have to drive a bit/have it shipped via plane. Course, you might find one in a local shelter. You never know. Dont get one from the wild.
