A solid state drive (ssd) is a harddrive made out of no movable parts compared to standard mechanical harddrives. instead it uses different types of flash memory cells which it read and writes from. This give ssd's a high read and write speed as well as a very low access and search time, as nothing have to move around to find something. They are also very durable thanks to no moving parts which means you can throw them around best you want (sure they will break but not like a mechanical drive which is very sensetive to movments)
