Is global warming to blame for the heat wave some states are going through or is it normal temparature range?

We have been experiencing record droughts in the south and weather reporters keep mentioning record highs around thhe country.

We can’t reliably take a single weather event and deduce from it that the climate is changing. We need to look at the global picture over a period of at least 30 years. This will give a much more accurate overview of what’s happening with the global climates.

It won’t come as any surprise to hear that the world is indeed warming up, so much so that the current average global temperatures are the highest they’ve been for 130,000 years.

Since the end of the last ice-age some 8,000 years ago, the temperature trend has been a downward one as we head toward the next ice-age. All those thousands of years of cooling have been undone by just a few decades of warming.

Here’s the temperature graph for the last 12,000 years. I’ve updated it based on the widely circulated graph that ends in 2004.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/trevorandclaire/72590...

    Here’s the original: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_Climatic_Opt...

When we talk about the climate we always use minimum periods of 30 years, this is so that short-term influences are eliminated. If we compare the number of heatwaves in the last 30 years with the preceding 30 years we find that numbers have more than doubled. Not only that, but the intensity has significantly increased as well, hence the massive increase in heatwave related fatalities.

2003 saw the deadliest heatwave ever with over 70,000 people killed in Europe, then in 2010 we had the second deadliest when 56,000 people died – mainly in Russia. In fact, all the worst heatwaves have happened since 1980 and it wasn’t until that year that any heatwave claimed more than 1,000 lives, now we have them claiming tens of thousands of lives.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Northern_Hemisph...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_wave

Although there has been a significant increase in the number of all types of heatwaves, it’s the increase in the number of severe or extremely dangerous heatwaves that is perhaps the most alarming. Since the start of this decade there have been nine severe heatwaves, in the last decade there were seven, in the whole of the last century there were ten.

Current – one severe heatwave every 3 months.

Recent - one severe heatwave every 17 months.

Past - one severe heatwave every 120 months.

    EDIT: TO SAGEBRUSH (1)

Your psychosis is evident once again, so too is your hatred of facts. Accept reality, it’s not going to change just because you don’t like it. Incessant lying and false accusations only serves to highlight your own desperation and your ever diminishing grip on reality.

    EDIT: TO SAGEBRUSH (2)

I’m not even going to point out the stupidity of the graph you linked to, instead I’ll leave it to you to attempt a justification, do bear in mind that I know what the graph is, where it comes from and what it relates to. Please go ahead.

As for the European coldwave – 824 fatalities.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_European_cold_wa...

The European heatwave – 70,000 fatalities.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_European_heat_wa...

PS – The question is about heatwaves, not coldwaves. The whole idea of Answers is to answer questions that people ask, you’ve made no attempt to do so – why is that?

    EDIT: TO SAGEBRUSH (3)

Sorry, you’ve failed (again). The graph is Lamb’s 1965 graph primarily based on HadCET. It’s 47 years out of date and represents one ten-thousandth of the global surface. Perhaps you should have read the IPCC report first, then you would have known what it actually was. Here’s what the graph looks like when it’s up to date. And by the way, this is Steve McIntyre’s work, not mine:

Yes, 25,000 pensioners died because of the cold. It happens EVERY year in the UK, this is the average figure. Yet again, your inability to handle facts is your undoing.

I believe Global Warming has the most contribution to the heat wave.

was 1934, 1936 and 1954 also a result of global warming, because all three were hotter

Trevor jsut summed everything up. So yes global warming contributed to the heat wave but its not entirely responsable.

Some Warmist are trying to blame Global Warming but it has happened million times

before . Today is the last day in some places normal temps next week ..

Trevor just summed up everything but he is wrong. In his first doctored up chart he goes back and shows allegedly 12000 years. The chart shows this time to be the hottest time with a hockey stick ending which has been proven false.

Go to this site and go to page 51

    http://rps3.com/Files/Ochkosh_2010_talks/Oshkosh20...

On this page shows you temperatures accepted by the IPCC because it is in their 1990 report. This widely accepted chart is nowhere near the fraud that Trevor is trying to push on you. The reason I show this to you from Rutan's document is because he is meticulous in his research and explains why this chart jibes with science and what he bases his decision on. As you can see the earth has been steadily warming since 1700. This is a natural cycle. Trevor's abomination isn't even closed to established science.

In his answer he says, "All those thousands of years of cooling have been undone by just a few decades of warming." Unfortunately for him recent history shows another story. History has shown that the earth's temperature declined over the last decade not risen and not wiped out any thousands of years of cooling as he alludes to.

Trevor claims he is a scientist with a degree yet he doesn't know the difference between theory and fact. I know I had a superior education in high school but we all knew what a theory was and since being a Freshman we all knew what was fact and what was theory. And I suppose other schools in the US did the same.

If Global Warming is so established, why do these greenies have to doctor charts and distort data? Why do they have to present themselves as authorities when, in fact, they know absolutely nothing about the subject?

Also Trevor told you about the deadliest heat wave in 2003 but did he tell you about last winter being the deadliest winter in Europe due to record cold? Facts like these play an important part in making ones decision. If you are going to argue a fact in honesty you should not withhold the truth.

EDIT: Trevor: Specifically what lie? The chart was accepted by the IPCC and has been extensively peer reviewed, yet it doesn't correspond to yours. Are you denying that a lot of people died in Europe due to cold? If you are going to call a man a liar at least specify which item it is. Of course I consider calling me a liar by those of your type a badge of honor. So thank you.

    Joseph Goebbel,

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, FOR THE TRUTH IS THE MORTAL ENEMY OF THE LIE, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” (Capitalization mine)

Trev: The reason you won't is because you can't. That graph has been accepted by the IPCC.

    http://www.ipcc.ch/ipccreports/far/wg_I/ipcc_far_w... Page 202

It is in their 1990 report. (I am repeating this because apparently it hasn't sunk in.) It is peer reviewed and it is genuine with nickle plating on it. Ha! Ha! Bluster won't get you anywhere with an intelligent person.

According to Dr Ros Altmann, Director General of Saga in England 25,000 pensioners died of cold and due to the lack of fuel to heat with.

You were the one who brought up deaths due to record heat but you should offset that by extreme cold too in order to provide all the picture as every good scientist should do. Otherwise it is just propaganda.
