For the M&P I would second the Aimpoint/Eotech suggestions. However as the other guys said, they are not so hot if you do want to try and shoot out to any distance. I struggle using those sights beyond 200.The reticle is too big and blocks too much past then.

However, for 5.56 all I need is an OK crosshair and 4x. So for what it is worth, my advice is the Leupold 1-4x (or any decent 1-4).

I use 3x9 deer hunting scope. Leave it at 3x for fast close up shots, and if you need to reach out to 600 yards crank it up to max. Why limit yourself to some red dot that wont allow you to do long range precision shooting?

That depends on what you are using it for. I personally like Aimpoint Red Dot sights.

What distance will you be shooting?

Added: For close range, WRG is right. For groundhogs, 20 power AO.
