Farmington Hills,Troy and Sterling Heights have been ranked among the safest larger cities in the US and have lots of good lodging.Southfield has lots of lodging and great police protection-I have done some security work in that city and the police do a very good job there. Royal Oak is safe but doesnt offer as much lodging. Dearborn may be worth a look. Most of the unsafe areas are in Detroit, Pontiac and Highland Park, and away from downtown areas, in places with no decent hotels anyway. Most decent places, like the Holiday Inns, Quality Inns, Hiltons, etc. are outside of the impoverished, crime-ridden areas.
And as far as the above suggestion goes, don't go to 8 Mile looking for the 8 Mile Mobile Court sign. It does not exist. There is NO such place called "8 Mile mobile court" and the sign was a temporary movie prop.
