If I lived in Germany in the early 40s, what would have happened to me?

I'm of 'Pure Aryan Race' according to Hitler's description and I love Germany and am committed to the state, but I am a communist and sympathise with the suffering of the Jews.

It all depends on how strongly you make your stance, as a communist you might end up dead for your beliefs, but if you backed down and fell in line you might have lived.Hitler killed a lot of German communists, your race might not have been enough to save you.

By the early 1940's Hitler had already purged the Communists from Germany. The fact your still alive, not in prison or exiled means you must have recanted your views, learned to pretend or just learned to shut-up.

You could sympathize with the Jews all you want as long as you didn't try to organize against anything the government was doing and kept your mouth shut.

Most likely you would have not known of the suffering of the Jews beyond things like the Nuremberg Laws, which were par for the time in the frame of Jewish inequality. Hitler made the existence of the labor camps public in 1933. However, extermination camps were kept a state secret that the SS planned to take to the grave. The fact that you know of the suffering of the Jews means that you must be an member of one of Hitler's SS divisions. But since your a Communist you must have been offered a position as an Auxiliary-SS member in a Concentration Camp since your probably in one if you know of those crimes.

You're not an Aryan. An Aryan doesn't necessarily have to have blonde hair and blue eyes (although preferred). In the Third Reich an Aryan was defined as what it wasn't. If you weren't Jewish, Capitalist, Communist, Socialist, Marxist, Russian, Slavic, Homosexual, Handicapped, a career criminal, an A-Social (Social Outcast), etc. or somehow deemed an enemy of the sate and you contributed to Hitler's Volksgemeinschaft then you were Aryan.

    Edit:

You may even be able to go up to a Gestapo officer and say you disagree with the Nuremberg Laws. He would chew you out for it, but just saying you disagree in a passive situation probably would have had no legal consequences. However, whether or not other people agreed with you, you would be shunned from society. The Third Reich was a world of insiders and outsiders; insiders were rewarded and outsiders were punished. Expressing beliefs like that would push you further to the outside.

    1) There is no such thing as a "Pure Aryan Race" as Aryan refers to a linguistic form of the Indo-European language and the people that speak it, NOT an ethnic type or group. Hitler got it wrong.

    2) Unless you kept your mouth shut then you would be bleeding to death on a cell floor or traveling "up the chimney" somewhere in Eastern Europe. If you were female and the right age you might also be "employed" in a military brothel until it killed you. Better to keep quiet I think.

Well now you could sympathize but It's a way different world now then it was in the 40's. More than likely you would be a German soldier fighting on the Eastern front maybe the west.

Not many people are heroes or stupid. You would have probably knuckled under like the rest and hoped for better times.

You're a Communist? That alone should qualify you for commitment to a mental institution in any place, any time.

You would probably end up a S.S. guard in one of the camps.
