No set system for police ID cards in the US. In fact only one state has the same hi tech card for all police in that state and that will not happen for 12 months, law was just passed. All the police in that state do not amount to the number on my department alone, let alone my state.

All fed LE ids are 2 parters.

My department did not have official ID cards until 1980. Just our stars (badges).

The city transit authority issued us picture ID passes but we did not have to carry or display them.

Well this question depends on what agency your asking about. Take SCSO for example, we had two cards we kept with us while on duty, one to get into areas of the sheriff's office that are restricted, and one that is an agency ID card. Again it's dependent on what agency your asking about.
