What's the esoteric meaning of Leonard Cohen's speech before this song and this song If It Be Your Will?

The two sides he speaks of are freedom and safety. Which would you rather have; safety or freedom? The song following Leonard Cohen's speech is "If It Be Your Will," a prayer to put this decision in God's hands.
