Mitch McConnell is the Senate Minority Leader. He is the chief senate spokesman for the Republican Party, he also manages and schedule the legislative and executive business of the Senate along with Harry Reid, who is the majority leader.
Mitch McConnell is also one of the top members of the Republican Party, he has a lot of influence in the RNC and can help chose whether someone will win re-election or not by providing funds or not providing funds to the campaign. He can also chose to endorse another candidate (other then the incumbent Republican,) this rarely happens but it can happen.

He's the guy who leads filibusters against any attempt to control corporate money in politics, such as simply having to identify contributors to super-PACs.
