What is the best version of Adobe Photoshop?

I was looking at a photo editing software for mac because iPhoto can't do everything I need it to so I was looking at getting Adobe Photoshop but I noticed that they have different versions like Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4, Adobe Photoshop CS6, and Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended and I was wondering which is the best for someone who mainly just edits family photos and is not a professional. What is the difference between them and is it worth the upgrade from the base to the more advanced versions

If you just do basic photo editing then get lightroom.

for more detailed editing and complex tasks get photoshop...

For photographers lightroom dramatically speed up workflow, if there's something that needs superfine work or layers that's where we export form lightroom to photoshop edit, then return to lightroom.

Lightroom is the workhorse of modern digital photography.
