Is it illegal downloading HTML code of a website?

Hi, What if you copy HTML code of a website template and use it for personal use but not for commercial use, would it be illegal or doing it is okay?

Update:

by website template I didn't mean a running site like yahoo or some other but a simple website template on some template site like themeforest.net or any other.

If it is a template on a template site, then you'll have a download link if the template is free. Otherwise, you'll have a preview link with the amount the template costs to buy. Free or purchased templates are yours to use as you see fit as templates are offer for you to modify/customize. If you are in doubt, look fr the Terms of Use that should be available.

We put a lot of effort into designing our sites.

Our template design is part of our content, we own that, and using it infringes on our copyright.

There are a lot of sites that offer free and paid for templates. You can use any of those.

Studying a template to discover how certain things were accomplished is fine, but copying the code crosses a line.

Design cannot be copyrighted, but the source code (HTML) can. Hence it will be illegal to copy HTML and use as it is. You need to modify it to a very large extent. With that said, there isn't a lot of distinct variations you can do with HTML to achieve the same rendered design so it's hard to sue you for that.

There is no "code' to make something "auto download". Unless it's a virus. Either create your video in something standard (like Flash) or just put up with it. Here's the problem: people don't know if the thing you're asking them to install is a virus/trojan or not. I wouldn't. Also, is this thing people have to download Windows-based? Then you've just eliminated every Mac and Linux user.

Downloading (like for a spider or search engine) is acceptable.

Using another sites code for your own site is not. Depending on the source site you could find yourself in some very serious legal trouble.

Downloading is OK. Reusing it and not giving credit is.

  • No unless it is copyright. Then you should modify it.
