Why was it unconstitutional for the state of Maryland to tax the Bank of the US?

Basically John Marshall (Chief justice of the Supreme court) said that in his words "the power to tax is the power to destroy". He felt that is a state bank were to tax the national bank, then that would violate the supremacy clause.Source(s): For more help contact: email@example.com
