compound: a substance made of two or more elements whose atoms are combined into molecules, so they no longer have their original characteristics. For instance water is a compound made of oxygen and hydrogen, but it's not like either of them at all.
element: a substance that can't be divided into two or more things.
iron: Iron is an element! It's a metal, used by itself or made into steel. The Eiffel Tower is made of iron.
cool: in chemistry to cool means to lose heat. Cooling can be accomplished through convection, conduction or radiation.
