The greater the number of people who stayed out late, the higher the chance was that certain incidents would occur.

為什麼不寫"the higher the chance that certain incidents would occur".

=> If the number of people who stayed out late was/became greater, the chance that certain incidents would occur was higher.

The greater the number of people who stay out late is, the higher the chance that certain incidents occur is.

The number of people is great.

    The chance is high.

The greater the number of people is, the higher the chance is.

The older I get, the happier I am.=我年紀越大越快活。

If the number of people becomes greater, the chance of xxx will become higher.

If the number of people who stay out late become greater, the chance that certain incidents occur will be higher.

John believed that the greater the number of people who stayed out late was, the higher the chance that certain incidents occured was.

John believed that if the number of people who stayed out late became greater, the chance that certain incidents occured would be higher.
