A day is one rotation of the Earth. God created the universe in 6 days. How did he know how long a day was?

If there was no Earth?

It doesn't say he created the universe in six days. He created the heavens and the earth. On day one he created light (and scientists agree that without the myriad forms of light-waves, there could be no universe). The Big Bang theory can accord wonderfully well with this! Day two he started doing things on planet earth, through to the end of day six when Adam and Eve were the culmination of his work on earth.

Nor does it say they were 24-hour earth days. It just uses the enigmatic phrase, "And there was evening, and there was morning..." from day one through to the end of day six. One evening and one morning does not constitute a 24-hour earth day. It is the marker for darkness and light. The various days all began in darkness but ended in light, which could be a poetic way of saying that out of dark chaos, God created bright order.

We all know that when the earth first orbited the sun, it was rotating at a great rate of only five and a half hours and that it took a few billion years for gravity to begin slowing the rotation down. It could only have been by day four at the earliest that our present 24-hour rotations were operating because that is when the influences of the sun and the moon caused the present four seasons that we now have, and the present days and years (see Genesis 1:14).

The word used for 'days' can sometimes mean epochs. It's clear from the Genesis account that this could be the case, because after describing the six creative 'days', it summarises by saying "These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens." (Genesis 2:4) See how all six days are now called one day?

Some fundamentalists claim that creationism rather than evolution explains pre-human history. They assert that all physical creation was produced in just six days of 24 hours each sometime between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago. But in doing so, they promote an unscriptural teaching that has caused many to ridicule the Bible.

Is a day in the Bible always literally 24 hours in length? Genesis 2:4 speaks of "the day that Jehovah God made earth and heaven." This one day encompasses all six of the creative days of Genesis chapter 1. According to Bible usage, a day is a measured period of time and can be a thousand years or many thousands of years. The Bible's creative days allow for thousands of years of time each. Further, the earth was already in existence before the creative days began. (Genesis 1:1) On this point, therefore, the Bible account is compatible with true science.—2 Peter 3:8.

Commenting on claims that the creative days were only 24 literal hours in length, molecular biologist Francis Collins remarks: "Creationism has done more harm to serious notions of belief than anything in modern history."

I in simple terms LOVE each and all the countless tries at explaining it away... they choose for everyone to connect interior the 'faith and ideology', yet can no longer agree on any of them... BTW the way, those talking approximately spinning the Earth. The Bible says no such ingredient. the triumphing 'concept' on the time became into that the solar rotated the Earth and the Earth stood nevertheless... "striking upon no longer something" IMHO

How did god know the sun orbited the earth back in the days without telescopes when the bile was being made up!! FAIL, the earth orbits the sun! No gods or devils exist anywhere outside of any ones properly inculcated mind! The only truth since the bile says you need a (pretend fake) belief of faith on your part to believe any gods or devils are even believable! Brainwashing gives you that "pretend fake belief of faith", not any man made up religious "truth's"!!!

2 Peter 3:8, says one day with God, is as a thousand years to us. So it definitely wasnt a literal 24 hr day like we are used to.

it doesnt mean 6 24 hour days, it means 6 long periods of time.. He alone is the creator (All Knowing) Peace!

If you look at the original word that was used, "day" is only one translation or rendition. "Period" looks like it would be a better choice. Except "day" is more poetic. So it wins.
