We did not call ourselves "hippies". That was a word invented by Time magazine that enabled them to stereotype us for their readers in Fort Lauderdale. The word we used was the more commonly shouted insult "freaks".
Boy, that was a long time ago. I am only in touch with a half dozen of those people now. Two of them are as Republican as former "Yippie" loudmouth Jerry Rubin, one is a Libertarian who nonetheless thinks Ron Paul is an idiot, two are Liberals and one still lives in a cabin on the ocean.
The stereotypes then were grossly inaccurate and they remain so now.
The Republicans both got into business. The Libertarian is a lawyer, and does not see what a contradiction in terms that is. One of the Liberals is a teacher and the other made millions in real estate. The drop out inherited enough money to buy the beach he lives on. I am an ER physician.
From my computer I have emailed these people and asked them your question. I got four responses. One of the republicans is voting Democrat because he cannot stand Romney, the other is on your side. The Libertarian will be voting for anyone who will end the war on drug users, but he is fine with Liberalism compared to the "socially invasive agenda of the pro life clowns". Neither of the Liberals has responded yet, and I am tired of waiting, but the man on the beach says that it isn't the Liberals he is hiding from.
The major point I am trying to make here is that the conservative press labelled us then with a stereotype that was as inaccurate then as it is today. Your question is flawed because it accepts that stereotype.
