why do most organic compounds react much more slowly than ionic compounds?

    Organic compounds react through functional groups (alcohol group, amino group, etc.) while ionic compounds essentially are the functional groups. If they are ionized, the "groups" are small and readily available. Organic compounds have only a small portion of the molecule is reactive.
